it seems to the Sensational Alex Harvey Band version.

thanks! I have been listening to this version for years not knowing who it is. I am actually not familiar with Alex Harvey...should I be ashamed?
After looking them up I realized...oh yea! that fucking 70's band with the goddamn mime guitar player that I immidiately wrote off when a roommate brought the record home from the thrift store.
teaches me right.
I posted a good version that I dredged up on a P2P.
here's one more version...

that! also teaches me right for not being very organized in my method of plundering the 365 days archive!
thanks!
Great post ! As a french guy, I know Brel song for ages, but I didn't know the english version has been covered so often ! Thanks you very much for making me discover this !!!
I'm aware of a Marc Almond version (album I got rid off, I'm afraid, not deep enough, imho), but also a Gavin Friday version that's pretty good, if interested.
Alex Harvey and I used to be in McDonald's commercials.
He was the Hamburglar, and I was one of the stupid fry boxes.
It used to make me very angry, since he got to be a real character, while I was nothing but greased-up spuds.
Bastard, I hope you get left on the grill too long!
All right. I made this all up. Sue me if you must.
We used to play "Next" with various groups and in various arrangements in the early 90s. I knew only Harvey's version since the mid 80s, so we were basically covering it. I also heard Gavin Friday's version around 1992. In fact this is the first time I hear the original version...
Coincidentally I have uploaded a live version played and sung by my very self a couple of weeks ago for someone to download -- and it's still up there... :)
It was recorded 1993 in Reithalle Bern, Switzerland, using a simple cheap stereo "ghetto blaster" cassette recorder put on a chair in front of the stage. Amazingly the recording quality was better than anyone would have guessed!
Here you can see a photo from the very same gig.
On that particular gig I was singing and playing the song solo, because we had new musicians in the group and not enough time to learn all songs for the gig. On other gigs we had usually a basic rock arrangement with saxophone playing the violin parts and me playing electrified ukulele instead of guitar. I have yet to digitalize my archives to find other interesting versions of "Next".
Through 1994 I used to perform a version of this song, which I translated to the Swiss German dialect, in a street circus show. Unfortunatelly I don't have a recording of any of those shows.
But I remember that a lot of people were offended by the lyrics. Go figure...
Regarding Alex Harvey, he's my long time favorite. We also used to play "$25 For A Massage" or "Snake Bite", among others (not with this group though).
