B.S. Pully

B.S. Pully was a dirty nightclub comedian and character actor, best known for his portrayal of Big Jule in the stage and film versions of "Guys and Dolls"...but best known to me as J. Charles Twilight in the Don Knotts vehicle The Love God?

The B.S. stands for Bull Shit. And it's terlit humor.

I love this guy's thick gravelly voice and often clumsy delivery. The strangest thing about this record is the obviously fake laugh track which sounds as if the same three seconds of audience laughter is looped and fed through some sort of phasing delay...eventually the stand-out high pitch cackle will have you pulling your hair.

I wish I knew more about B.S. Pully...but I don't. Help me out if you can.

Speaking of Don Knotts and The Love God? (google video trailer)...here is a bit of audio from the film if the trailer doesn't wet your appetite enough.

Don Knotts RIP 1924-2006

Is anyone interested in designing a new template for Cake & Polka Parade? This one depresses me and no matter how much I spruce it up with nice images and the occasional table- it's still very claustrophobic and clunky.

I downloaded the B.S. Pully comedy bit and listened to it on my way to work. Wow. The jokes were unfunny and dated, but I found myself completely sucked in.

You were right -- the irritating background laugh -- "Heh haw haw! Heh haw haw!"

Wow, that was painful. His delivery. His voice. It's hypnotic and odd.

And I'm listening to it again now. You are evil. Thank you.

B.S. Pully - what's to know? He was exactly what you think. Minor comedian and character actor, best known as "Big Jule" in Guys and Dolls, and oh yeah, real last name Lerman, father of the lawyer who defended Rodney King.

I think you might like Bobby Dell. Same vintage but tilting toward Richard Simmons. Like B.S., only made one album.

I found your blog looking for more information on BS Pully.

I met him about 38 years ago while I worked for the Mike Douglas Show in Philadelphia. He was a guest and was unbelievably hysterical on the air to the point that things were almost out of control. He did a sight gag of shoving his coat in a certain way above his shoulders while he leaned against a wall and it looked like he was hanging from a meat hook.

After the show I walked with him about 6 blocks to show him where his hotel or a restaurant was and for the 10 or 15 minutes we were together he talked and had me laughing entire way. His voice, demeanor and delivery were memorable.
